The Shoto HDK can, and is intended to be used with, a battery.

The battery charger IC on the Shoto HDK charges at 1A of current. It is wise not to go higher than 2C when charging a Li-Po battery, as it will degrade faster over time with higher charge rates. Based on this rule, we recommend a Li-Po battery with at least a 500 mAh of capacity.

Choosing a battery greater than this capacity will not affect performance and will extend battery life, but based on your space constrains you may need to select a small battery. Again, we recommend not to select a battery smaller than 500 mAh.
